About the Program
(Major Code: BS8122)
Exercise Physiology is the study of how the body responds to the stress of exercise. This includes how the body responds to the acute stimulus of exercise stress, as well as, how the body adapts to a chronic exercise stimulus (training). This requires an understanding of basic human anatomy, human physiology and exercise physiology. This background knowledge can be applied to evaluate physical fitness levels and then develop and administer appropriately designed exercise prescriptions.
An exercise physiologist applies these skills to meet the fitness needs of all populations, including clinical rehabilitation (cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation), general heath promotion and disease prevention (community and corporate fitness), and performance enhancement of an athletic population (strength and conditioning coaches).
Exercise Physiology is one of the two programs included in the area of sport sciences in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences. Upon successful completion of all requirements and official application for degree conferral, a student will be awarded the Bachelor of Science in Sport Sciences. The program option can be used to fulfill most of the School of Physical Therapy’s Prerequisites for admission.
Students interested in the Exercise Physiology program will enter Ohio University with a pre-major code of ND8122 (Pre-Exercise Physiology). To be admitted into the major, you must apply and be accepted after successful completion of 10 required courses and achieving an accumulative g.p.a. of 2.0 or higher.
